In each teaching position, teachers encounter two different classes:
New groups: the students in this group don’ know each other and may not be familiar with the EFL methodology.
Existing groups: students already know each other and have been expose to the EFL methodology.
In the first lesson it is crucial to establish some rapport with the students, to know their needs and their English level. Avoid jumping to grammar lesson right away.
Teachers can use games, memory games and surveys to know more about them and at the same time the students will know more about you!
If you get large classes you can use some techniques to manage them: use worksheets to have everybody involved and working, pair work, and choral repetition. Be clear and simple. Avoid using the student’ native Language, the more exposure to English they get, the faster they will learn.
When having different levels in a class, use pair work, stronger students with weaker ones, but don’t let the stronger ones to dominate the weaker ones. It is important that every single student gets involved and participates in lessons.
Sometimes students dont’t seem to want to talk. To encourage them to talk the teacher can use pair work, controlled practice, role plays and recorder devices.
