This unit was certainly very thought-provoking for me. For question #20. If I had spoken to Jack earlier in the day, I would most likely use the first response. If I had called Jack at home while he was currently having dinner, I would most likely use the second response. The same issue would also hold true for question #18 - it would depend upon when I spoke to Kate. I can see where these rules would be confusing to learn for non-native English speakers. Particularly if/when native English speakers don't necessarily follow the grammar rules themselves!
