This unit gives a brief overview of the parts of speech focusing on each one in separate sections. It begins with the main categorization of nouns (proper, common, compound, abstract and collective) and also focuses on the difference between countable and uncountable nouns. Adjectives are next part of speech this unit deals with. It briefly defines them and focuses mostly on the comparatives and superlatives. There is also a section on the distinction between definite and indefinite articles and their proper, use as well as the use of the zero article. When it comes to the verbs the focus lies on the distinction between transitive and intransitive verbs and how some verbs can be both depending on the context. Moreover, there is a brief summary on infinitives, auxiliary verbs, as well as an extensive list of the verb forms of irregular verbs. Following the verbs come the adverbs with their main categorization and their order(s) within the sentence. Furthermore, there is the description of the gerund and its use in the sentence as well as the relationship and difference between a gerund and a verb. The pronouns are tackled after the gerunds and this unit deals with their categorization (personal, possessive, reflective and relative) and it also briefly brings light to the difference between possessive pronouns and possessive adjective, which can sometimes be confusing and not as apparent at first glance as it is with the other parts of speech. Last but not least come the prepositions and conjunctions described in the same manner- in their categorization and their use in a sentence.
This unit has given me the chance to refresh my knowledge in this subject matter. I have already tackled this part of the English grammar in my university courses, however, I have to admit that I have learned some new points, such as the particular order of multiple adjectives or adverbs (although it may not be a strict rule, it is still a helpful reference).
