This unit was a good reminder to me of the importance of a teacher understanding their students as well as being able to handle a variety of roles in the classroom. Each of these roles are important and an effective teacher knows how and when to use each role to provide an appropriate balance between a teacher-centered and student-centered classroom that allows for maximum learning benefit for the students. An effective teacher also understands the importance of knowing his or her students: their strengths, weaknesses, concerns, motivations, and current language ability, in order to create a positive classroom environment that supports each learner in achieving their goals.
