Unit #20, Teaching Special groups deals with teaching A. A Business English class and; B. Teaching young kids. Two spectrums with different levels of motivation and abilities- not to mention attention spans.
This unit details two important points: English skills assessment and "needs" assessment; plus "negotitate" discussion, for the adult learners. Important point to remember is the often inability of adult learner not having the time to do homework; and missing class because of work.
In contrast the young learner may not have the motivation of the older learner, but has the capacity (if not the attention span) to catch on quickly. It is important to vary the tasks with the young learner, have an established routine, and put "fun" into the activities.....with different activitiies like using color pens, drawing, etc.
the section on the individual learner is important as many teachers find giving individual lessons when teaching abroad. the activities and the one-on-one teaching may tire the teacher - so it is important to have a variety of tasks for the lesson: incorporate writing, listening and reading to the speaking lesson.
