In this unit I learned a more about the different conditionals and its resulting consequences. When using conditionals in every day speech one doesn’t necessarily keep the rules or different conditionals in mind.
The teaching ideas for the second, third and mixed conditionals in particular gives a sound illustration of how to apply the conditionals and its corresponding consequences. It also illustrated to me how to distinguish between hypothetical scenarios and scenarios that are hypothetical but can have real possible consequences.
In terms of the direct and reported speech the perfect tenses can be rather tricky in the reported speech thus caution should be taken when teaching it. I believe the grammar rules should be drilled and explained in order to get the desired (correct) result.
It’s especially common to make the mistake of confusing the way the verb changes depending on the tense when reporting back. The present continuous tense is a case in point since it changes to the past perfect continuous.
