Coursebooks, authentic materials, and created materials can all be used in the classroom. It is up to the teacher to decide which materials to use while conveying information. Although coursebooks aren't necessarily required, the students are generally expecting to use them throughout class. It is important to carefully select coursebooks in order to fit the needs of your students.
I think that a combination of all three teaching methods is important to use. Coursebooks can be used to follow a certain syllabus of information, and a combination or authentic/created materials can be used in activities to allow the topics to sink in.
