I think it is good idea for a TEFL teacher to research and get to know the culture before going. For example, my first teaching job was in New Mexico. I taught math and religion to the Navajo tribe. During my experience there, I learned their customs and spirituality. For instance, it is a taboo to draw the following animals on a board in the classroom: turtle, owl, coyote, and a snake. All of these animals appear evil in Navajo folklore. So in reality of teaching the Navajo children about the Garden of Eden was really difficult because I could not draw or show a picture of snake.
