Placement tests are important at the beginning of the course to see their baseline level of knowledge of what is going to be learned. You gain knowledge of the levels that your students are at from the start. Progress tests are used to evaluate what has been learned throughout the course. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests, but are used to help the teacher to prepare lessons based on what the students already know. Practice tests are formatted to what the students will take in the form of an external exam. There are many kinds of external exams to prepare for. There are some that are used for admission to United States universities (TOEFL), IELTS which is used for people who have to use English as the main form of communication in college or work, the TOEIC external test for people who are reading and listening to English at work, and the Cambridge Assessments.
