There are many different ways to pair the class while doing work. These consist of: whole-class grouping, individual work, pair-work, and group work. Whole class grouping creates a sense of purpose within the class, but can be discouraging to quieter students. Individual work allows the students to become more self reliant and allows the teacher to respond to each person individually. Pair-work increases student talk time and gives students a safe place to share information before bringing it to the rest of the class. Finally, group work allows students to choose their level of involvement and encourages them to speak English in a small, natural setting.
It is always important for the teacher to stay involved and to engage the students regardless of how the class is paired together. The teacher should limit talk time to encourage students to participate, but still share enough information needed for them to feel successful. Teachers can minimize talk time and keep to the important stuff by using gestures, maintaining eye contact, and speaking in terms that the class is familiar with. It is important to have students repeat instructions back to you and to ask questions to ensure everyone understands.
