I think coursebooks have their place in the esl classroom because they can cater to the syllabus and provide levels of progression as well as offer the student a reference if they need it. However teachers should not heavily rely on them and base their lessons around them. It's important that teachers look at the coursebooks with a critical eye and analyse them thoroughly to see what can be omitted, replaced adapted or supplemented so that the materials used are best suited to whichever ESA methodology.
