In this unit the topic of pronunciation is discussed which is an aspect of learning the English language which is often neglected. Making it even more difficult is the fact that many native English speakers find it difficult to detect certain sounds such as rising or falling pitch at the end of a sentence. Among hundreds of ESL students surveyed many of them listed pronunciation as a very important skill they wish to improve upon. Pronunciation is a fascinating topic because the same word can have several meanings depending on the pitch and tone. Intonation refers to the variation of volume and pitch within a sentence. Rise/fall is a normal pattern of intonation for the English language. Fall/rise intonation can reveal that the speaker is looking for confirmation or a response from the audience.
