The subject discussed in the first unit was focused on the traits of good teachers and learners of English. Unlike previous teaching methods, the focus of teaching commonly found today is student-based education, where the educator should take the students as their first and foremost priority. Some aspects of a good teacher may include personality traits such as patience and enthusiasm, but also some interaction based traits such as the willingness to involve students and correct them in a non-offensive way. Similarly, students should be motivated and willing to ask questions and experiment with the new language, and should also accept advice when it is given. Also in the unit, the different stages of study and differences between young learners and adult learners were discussed. The most prominent difference I found in the two different age groups is that adults have more motivation and willingness to learn, whereas although younger learners may not have a clear goal in terms of studying, they will be open-minded to experimenting with the language, and will have a easier time absorbing the grammatical rules of English.
