Teaching English to types of classes, as with all teaching, involves looking at the class from the student's point of view and paying attention to the needs of the student, i.e. relationships. The sentence that jumped off the page to me was on page 8 ..."you shouldn't assume that learning is a direct consequence of teaching." WOW! but probably true. One should not be overly concerned if students resort to the native language as they work in pairs or groups. This is efficient for them. If the teacher does not understand the native language, whether or not the students understand the directions may not be evident until the group work is done.
