In the Unit 8 I learned about how to teach vocabulary, grammar, and functions to students by using the 4 steps to learning language: exposure to it, understanding its meaning, understanding how its constructed, and being able to produce examples and practice the language. Some educators look at grammar as the trunk of the tree of language and vocabulary as the leaves of the language. Its important to introduce students to new vocabulary and grammar in a balanced way so as not to overwhelm the student or to bore the student. Through the application of ESA methods educators can successfully introduce a new language to students. Even to a new student there may be some English vocabulary words that they already know, which can be a helpful starting point. On the other hand, some techniques to introduce grammar elements include discussion, scenario building, prompting, questions and answers, and using visuals such as pictures or drawings.
