This unit explained the complexity of the future tense. The future tense has a few more forms than those of present and past tense. In this unit we learned about them and how present simple and present continuous can be uses to talk about the future as well.
Future simple tense is used to talk about tasks and certainties, promises and threats, spontaneous decisions and predictions which have no evidence. This tense usually has I will/shall or the contracted forms of those words.
Future continuous tense is subject plus will be followed by the -ing form of the verb. We use it to say something that will be in progress in the future, to predict the present to say what we think may happen, to politely inquire about someones plans or to refer to fixed future events.
Future perfect tense is used to say that something will have been done, completed or achieved by a certain time in the future. It is sometimes confused with future perfect continuous tense.
Future perfect continuous tense is used to say how long something will have been continued by a certain time.
Going to + infinitive form is used to express intentions, predictions based on evidence and plans made before speaking. This tense is often confused with perfect simple tense.
Present simple and present continuous can also be used to talk about the future. Present simple can be used to suggest a more formal situation, to talk about timetables or schedules and can suggest a more impersonal tone. Present continuous is used for definite time arrangements, and discussions and plans without a time frame.
We can see that most forms of the future tense are used to make predictions in some way. Activities for students may require some worksheet exercises to help them study these tense forms.
