Unit one primarily deals with the role and characteristics of the teacher and the learner. In my opinion this unit presented a different paradigm for assessing the qualities of a good teacher that concentrated more on motivating and connecting with students than just having superior knowledge of a English as a subject. The listing and explanation of the different roles of a teacher was likewise helpful in prompting a balance between lecturing, interaction with students, and independent student learning.
The unit also provided useful information on how teachers should be aware of the characteristics of the leaners such as: culture, age, abilities, and motivation to have a better understanding of the strengths and needs of their students. While the language learner bears a level of responsibility in their individual progress I think this unit correctly re-enforces the idea that the progress of the student is directly related to the quality of the teaching.
