This unit explains the different methodologies, theories and techniques used when teaching. Although there are many ways to teach English, some are more effective than others, and how effective they will be would depend on how you teach, and your students. The ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) method seems to borrow from each method at least a little bit.
In the suggestopaedia method the focus is on making the students, confident, comfortable and relaxed. The aim is to decrease the “Affective filter” which will help students learn better. We can see how activities used in the engage stage of the ESA method might do that, perhaps minus the music. Community language learning might also be helpful to get the class going, depending on how out-going and confident the students are to talk to each other.
The grammar-translation method and audio-lingualism method contain techniques that may be included in activities during the study stage of ESA. This is the part of the lesson where students learn the target language, which may include learning new grammar or vocabulary depending on the level of the student.
Task-based learning and communicative language learning include techniques used in the activate stage of ESA. These might include activities such as role play and putting the newly learned language into practice.
It is important to know the best time for correcting a students’ error or mistake. Wording the correction in a positive way, not interrupting the student in the middle of speaking, and explaining the correction clearly will help the students understand the correction more.
There are some methods that just don’t work on their own, and it is important to introduce different methods of teaching English. Teaching grammar alone will not teach them to speak English and just playing word games is not going to teach your students how to form a sentence. Knowing what your student already knows and needs to learn or improve on is important in choosing the method you might use.
