Prairie Village, Kansas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
There are many problems that may arrive when teaching English. In the first lesson, the teacher needs to be aware of the make up of the students. For example, if the students don't know each other, then extra time must be allotted to build rapport between them to create a comfortable and safe learning environment. The first class shouldn't have a lot of grammar or vocab drilling and instead should be used to assess the needs and levels of the student while having a good positive first impression of the course. When dealing with different levels of students, it's important to make sure that each student is supported. One way to do this is if the 'fast' students finish their work before the others, the teacher has something productive for them to work on. In large groups, teachers can give agency to the students by grouping them up based on ability (stronger students help weaker students) or assigning group leaders. In any situation, the native language of the students should be not be spoken by the teacher if possible, but students might resort to it to clarify something to their peers or if they haven't learned how to express what they want in English. The teacher can use controlled practice and pair work to aid in reluctant students. And finally, listening practices can be improved by making sure the quality of the recordings are good and equipping students with the proper vocabulary before the listening.
