This unit emphasized that receptive skills (listening and reading) and productive skills (speaking and writing) are equally important and teachers should try to incorporate all of them into lessons as much as possible. The text discusses the fact that listening and reading is not only about using one's eyes and ears, but also utilizing one's pre-existing knowledge of the world in order to understand the meaning of certain words in certain contexts.
One of the most valuable lessons I took away from this unit was the importance of pre-teaching difficult/unknown vocabulary before beginning a reading or listening activity. This will help remove some of the obstacles the students are likely to encounter. However, there needs to be a balance between pre-teaching structures and letting students access unknown language, as learning to understand texts without knowing every word is a skill that teachers should also encourage in their students. Therefore, teachers should only pre-teach the words that are essential to understanding and leave other vocabulary work for later.
