This unit discusses the advantages and disadvantages of course books, authentic material and creative material for both students and the teacher. It explains how lessons should include a variety of materials to avoid boredom and lack of motivation from the class and to adapt from course books if they are not quite up to date or relevant to your students. I have learnt that it is important not to rely on a course book alone just because it is graded to the student’s level and has been tested before. They do not always allow for student focused lessons, and don’t always cover everything the students want to know about a topic. The teacher should add to course book material as they go to ensure student’s needs and curiosity are satisfied and their language experience/ knowledge is widened further.
