Leon, Kansas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit consisted of two videos, demonstrating classes being taught in two very different manners. In both lessons the teacher was teaching the students “Have to/don’t have to/can/can’t”. And though I think this material meets the students’ level, even though it may be a bit low, I think how the concepts are explained are key. In the first video the teacher explained very little about what the students were to do in their activities and left them to figure it out on their own. He also gave very little time for the activities to be completed. When the students were incorrect, instead of positively telling them they got it wrong, he was belittling to them. He also checked his phone while the students were working on their worksheet, instead of walking around and monitoring the students. He was unfair when he played the game, and inconsistent with the rules. He also completely skipped the engage stage of the lesson, causing even more confusion.
In the second video when the teacher walked in and introduced himself, and got to know the students’ names, there was already an obvious difference in the atmosphere of the class. Students felt more confident to participate without confusion, and the teacher explained everything thoroughly. When the students did their worksheet, they worked together, creating more student talking and interaction time. During the activities he was either monitoring or participating. It was easy to see that the students were much happier, more confident and more comfortable in the second class by far.
