Kinsley, Kansas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit explains the importance, methods and difficulties of teaching receptive skills. Receptive skills include reading and listening. We must teach these to help students achieve a particular goal, for students' entertainment, and sometimes for both.
There are several different sub-skills that fall under learning to read. Students must learn predictive skills, how to skim or scan content, how to read a text for details and how to deduct a meaning from context.
Listening is a bit more difficult as it is often presented too quickly, not giving them time to deduce or comprehend it. With reading it is written out, so the students can spend more time on it. Length of the words and phrases, as well as familiarity can impact how difficulty the language is. It will be helpful for the teacher to pre-teach the language, and to carefully select text that are meant for language learning. The teacher must choose topics interesting to the students and motivate them to create more interest. The tasks must be an achievable challenge.
