Hoxie, Kansas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit has covered modals, passive voice and phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs are multi-verb words, or words which consist of a verb and one or two particles. These can be split into 3 basic types (something I did not know) known as transitive separable, transitive inseparable and intransitive verbs. English uses two voices, namely active and passive voice. Active voice removes the emphasis from the subject and places it upon the object/agent of the verb. It is important to note that the tense always remains the same with a change from active to passive - a tip which has helped me to better understand the change from active to passive voice. Modals are used before verbs, and add meaning to the verb. They have a number of functions such as expressing obligation, ability, advice, possibility and permission, and also have varying degrees of formality. There are subtle differences between the usages which I had not noticed before doing this unit. Lastly, relative clauses were divided into three groups: the dependent clause (incomplete sentence), the independent clause (complete sentence) and the relative clause (a dependent clause that modifies a noun).
