Hill City, Kansas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Unit 17 discusses various equipment and teaching aids that can be used to make lessons more interesting, effective and less dependent on the textbook. Though different schools have different resources, some of the most common are: white/black board, interactive white board, overhead projector, visual aids, worksheets and work cards, cassette recorder, CD player, videos and DVDs, video camera, dictionaries, course and resource books, photocopier, computers and online resources.
Next, unit gives more detailed overview of every resource and teaching aid, explaining advantages of each, describing how to use them efficiently and to their full potential. As a teacher I’ve already used most of these teaching aids (except for cassettes and OHP). Much of the advice on the interactive white board came in handy as my school has just switched to using one, but hasn’t provided the teachers with training for it. I believe it is much better than a simple white board, but without proper training it is frustrating trying to figure out yourself how things work.
The most essential aids nowadays I still believe are board, course books, worksheets, dictionaries, and photocopier; however much depends on the students’ age, as some of these equipment and teaching aids are more suitable for children, while other work better with adults. Online resources, on the other hand, I couldn’t live without. They are source of many ideas, suggestions and things one teacher could never think of himself/herself. I think they help teachers as well as students grow and develop their skills and knowledge. Many of the ones mentioned in the unit I have already been using and sharing with my students, however I have now discovered several new ones that should come in handy for some future classes (especially on business English)!
