This unit involved the consideration of various groups of students in the English Language classroom. The first group addressed is beginners which I originally thought was one group, but may be divided into 5 groups: absolute beginner, false beginner, adult beginner, young beginner and beginner without knowledge of the Roman alphabet. Secondly, you may work with individual students where one-on-one interaction is the main port of call and is often less formal in nature. A third category is children which is rewarding, but requires a great deal of variation, innovation, imagination, etc. to keep the learners interested. Then Business English or English for Specific Purposes is aimed more at adults who are trying to learn English which they require to communicate within the business world and comes with challenges as most of these people work and study simultaneously. I originally thought you would need a deep knowledge of business to do this, but it is simply the basics and then knowledge of how to communicate effectively using English. Lastly, a teacher may deal with multilingual and monolingual classrooms, which refer to whether there are many cultures and languages in the classroom or one, respectively. All of the groups require specific teaching methodologies and techniques, as well as considerations, but can (and should) all be approached using a Needs Analysis which will permit the teacher to know how to best help his/her students.
