Coffeyville, Kansas TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit revealed that writing is the most neglected skill in the TEFL world, as writing assignments are often given as homework exercises which will not always be completed by all students. This is very problematic, as writing is the more difficult skill, requiring a greater level of accuracy. Therefore, as a teacher, it is very important to incorporate writing activities during class time.
This unit also emphasized the importance of layout and punctuation, spelling, and handwriting when it comes to developing writing skills. For instance, many students - particularly those whose native language uses a different alphabetical system – can have difficulty forming English letters. This can be problematic, as poor penmanship can influence the reader in negative ways. Furthermore, incorrect spelling can not only create misunderstandings, but can lead the reader to believe that the writer is uneducated. And lastly, layout and punctuation can also present students with problems if the rules of their native language are significantly different from those of English. Without paying proper attention to layout and punctuation, spelling, and handwriting, we are not setting our students up to succeed in the workforce. Therefore, as a teacher, I will be sure to provide training on the formation of individual letters for my students, I will expose them to many different writing styles and different layouts of writing (emails, cover letters, etc.), and provide them with extensive reading materials to help them with spelling.
Speaking, however, requires the greater degree of fluency since the speaker rarely has time to think and plan an answer. When it comes to speaking activities, the teacher must try to encourage student interaction, which can be challenging, as many students are reluctant to speak in the classroom. This could be due to a lack of interest in subject matter, fear of making mistakes, peer intimidation or cultural reasons. Therefore, when I have my own class, I will always make sure to create a comfortable atmosphere where my students will not be afraid to speak or make mistakes.
