There was a lot of unfamiliar ideas in this unit. While familiar with phonology I hadn’t thought much about intonation, stress and rhythm in speech and teaching English. I know there are certain sounds I struggle with in other languages – the rolled r in Spanish, and many of the tones in Mandarin – I struggled to get my mouth to form the sound, so it makes sense that a student who was a native speaker of Vietnamese say, would struggle to make the T or D sound that doesn’t exist in that language – they literally would be re-training physical structure to adapt to a new way of articulation. This unit started by suggesting that practicing pronunciation is often neglected, but important. In both cases, I can see why.
