Unit 3 was very informative. Learning about the different methods and their progression over time was interesting. Learning about : The Classical Method,Audio-Lingual,The Silent Way,Suggestopedia ,TPR and finally ESA really opened my eyes about all the various methods that have been utilized over the years to teach language. I was shocked to find how ineffective The Classical method is and how it is still being utilized today . I must admit the Total Physical Response method did appeal to me as I saw it as a perfect way to increase vocabulary in young students -seeing as how they enjoy physical activity while learning.I was not a fan of the Suggestopedia method as it seems difficult to create the conditions required to learn. I do however agree that students should feel comfortable in your classroom.Finally, I think ESA with its 3 stage methodology (Engage-Study-Activate) is clearly the most effective method. By getting the students talking and thinking in English in the Engage stage it opens the door for the more serious board work and activities(like worksheets) in the Study stage.In the Activate stage it kind of brings it all together and allows the student to use what they have learned in a realistic context. I think the best part of ESA is that it is effective at all learning levels.
