The unit began by going over the concept of intonation and how it can change the context of a sentence (rise/fall, falling, fall/rise) followed by techniques for teachers to use when teaching intonation. Next the unit discussed the idea of stress in sentences and syllables and how stress cam also change the context of a sentence. The lesson gave rules for placing stress on the first, last, penultimate, ante-penultimate and compound words and concluded this portion of the unit with techniques teachers could use for explaining the concept of stress to English learners. Then the unit covered the phonetic alphabet, showing the phonetic symbols as well as describing its usefulness for being able to convey proper pronunciation. Finally the unit covered the idea of articulation, going over how sounds are made using the specific parts of the mouth (velar, palatal, palatal alveolar, alveolar, dental, etc) as well as the manner of articulation (Plosive, fricative, nasal, lateral, affricate and approximant). The lesson concluded by going over techniques for teaching articulation.
