Unit 11 gives an overview of the different methods of testing students for progress and the different tests and programs students might find themselves partaking in. There are three main tools a teacher can use to evaluate student progress: tests, tutorials, and student evaluations. Tests can include activities such as gap fills, multiple choice, and questions to be expanded on. They can usually be taken from teacher workbooks or unused pages of the workbook the students work in. Tutorials are a check in of sorts with students, on and individual or group basis, where the teacher discusses class successes over a certain period of time, how the students performed and if there are problem areas that need to be addressed. The last method is student evaluation. This refers to either a discussion or questionnaire on what the students feel they are learning, what they feel they haven't spent enough time on, or how difficult they believe the class to be.
Other than progress testing, students will often find themselves taking other forms of test, whether it be placement or diagnostic tests to figure out what material they know and what level class they should be placed in or external exams that usually gauge their ability to use English for certain situations such as work or living in an English speaking environment. Teachers can help their students prepare for external exams with practice tests, which can also help the teacher evaluate their students' progress and what needs to be revisited or expanded upon in class.
