Unit 11 covers ways to teach the receptive skills of reading and listening. These two strands are equally important and dovetail with each other – having the written words/sentences/paragraphs available while the student listens reinforces the connection between visual/reading and auditory/listening and helps the student learn. It talked about the purpose of reading – for fun or to garner information - how we read and listen based on our background, or lack of background knowledge, and techniques and activities to enhance and support language learning. It described a lesson using the patchwork planning structure, and reminded us that maintaining student interest and engagement is crucial to good outcomes.
