This unit focused on the use of coursebook and materials in teaching EFL.It is divided into two,these are the authentic and created or non-authentic materials.Authentic material examples are Newspapers.magazines brochures,songs etc.It is used because they are mainly use therefore it more interesting and motivating among students,students can gain confidence once they get use to it and they can be geared to a particular interest of a group of students.The Non-authentic material are those that are typically made by the teachers where teachers use there creativity to provide materials to their students,these can be like the used of flashcards,crosswords,pictures or other interesting games.It is also important to have a balance of authentic and non-authentic materials within the given activities.As a teacher we bring some materials that will help us to teach effectively inside a classroom like wipe board for making board plan,visual aid like pictures and relia as it aids memory and elicit language,worksheets which can act as prompt to introduce an act,the use of technologies like DVDs/CDs/Cassettes but we have the checf if all work well before using them,use of dictionaries which best works for homeworks and the use of resource books which have three series,the students books,workbooks which act in the study phase and teachers books for the activate phase.
There are also advantages in using coursebooks like it is quicker than creating materials on our own,it is graded for students level,it offers continuity,students expect to use them and is good for inexperienced teachers.As well as the advantages like should not be used for the whole class,do they consider the needs of the class,it tends to be a compromise,book dictates the teaching and teachers and students may not like it.The best use of coursebook is that they create balanced lesson,teacher does not use it all the time,do not rely on the information presented and match the material given to your students needs.The four approaches a teacher must consider to coursebook use are to omit,replace,supplement and adapt the information necessary for the students a well as the teacher to learn.
