The most valuable thing to take away from lesson 11 is the fact that not all students will have the same set of preexisting knowledge to aid in understanding. When teaching receptive skills, the instructor cannot only consider how much the target class SHOULD already, but what each individual does know. This allows the lesson to be tailored to the class, especially during the pre-activate stages when crucial vocabulary is being introduced based on what is important to the specific task or goal. I also liked the section about how we read and listen, as it does go beyond our ears and eyes. Using context is a major way for new language learners to ‘connect the dots’, so to speak, and patch together information from what you already know.
