We evaluate for different reasons: to place students at the level they should start, to decide what needs to be taught, to measure the progress they are making in their learning, to show students evidence of such progress, etc. It is an important component of our teaching, since it allows us to fine tune or adjust decisions respecting our work in order to get the best possible results. But the most important aspect, I believe, is that assessing gives us the opportunity of providing students with feedback that can help them to continually improve.
