Unit seven begins with an overview of how grammar, vocabulary, and functions interact. This meaning, that while grammar is important, without the vocabulary and understanding of how to use the vocabulary the grammar knowledge does not count for much in being able to speak languages. The first section of the unit, looks at how to pick and teach vocabulary. Depending on the teaching situation, instructors will usually be following a course book so picking vocabulary won't be challenging, however, the task can be daunting because the instructor is looking to teach words that can be used in multiple situations, words that are appropriate to the students' levels and knowledge base, and words that are relevant to a student's productive vocabulary. This section also reflects upon different activities that can help teach vocabulary and the structure in which vocabulary lessons are usually created, in this case, straight arrow ESA, though the lesson could be taken from multiple approaches.
The unit goes on to briefly cover a patchwork ESA grammar lesson with an example objective. The next section briefly covers language functions; these are they sound, different places in language where phrases and words are most commonly used. Such functions include inviting, suggesting, disagreeing, etc. This overview is followed by an ESA boomerang lesson to exemplify how to successfully teach language functions.
