Peosta, Iowa TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In this unit we look at troubleshooting as an ESL teacher whether with a new class or a class where students already know eachother. On the one hand in a first lesson where students don't know eachother there is more communication involved both among the students between themselves and between the teacher and the students. On the other hand less initial communication will be required if the students know eachother. Moving on we look at managing large classes and reluctant students , if and when the teacher should allow usage of the native tongue and how best to handle difficulties with listening texts. We are given advice /suggestions of first lessons activities and warmers(games,...) and a look at different levels within the same class. Personally I find teaching small groups of young or adult learners to be the most gratifying teaching experience. Personally it is important that the group should never be larger than 6 people - which of course is impossible when you teach in a public school where often there are 30 + students, there is no or little motivation not to mention a lack of discipline. The main reason why I find teaching small groups more interesting is because of the variety in experience, be it as professionals or as students. Currently I'm teaching FLE(French as a Foreign Language) to 3 students: one from Colombia, one from Nepal and a third one from Equatorial Guinea in Africa. Their language levels are different but by using games and presentations everyone learns a lot more from the teaching experience including the teacher.
