Classroom management is vital in any teaching situation. It is a skill, and one that is honed with time and experience. One must have a friendly and relaxed manner, but not too relaxed, as one must maintain discipline and command the respect of the students. I have had the fortune to use all of the presented classroom arrangements and am well-versed in the relative advantages and disadvantages each offers. Other important factors to consider are the teacher’s position within the classroom, use of eye contact, and the pronunciation and inflection of each word, which can transform the meaning in subtle ways. Teacher talk time must be managed in a way that is efficient and instructive in order to allow the students as many opportunities as possible to practice, and discipline must be maintained in order to get the most out of both the student as well as the teacher, as poor discipline can detract from the other students, especially those who are not as confident. For the most part, this was a review of techniques I have employed in the past. I found the maintaining discipline section the most instructive, and also came away with the observation that having the lesson prepared, white or chalkboards included, is far better than writing whilst trying to teach.
