It is very important to understand the different intonations and stresses that are in words and sentences .Reading the words first is an error because it is necessary to learn how words are pronounced first with the activities proposed,( like with tongue twisters, for example). An example I can give where students have difficulties in pronouncing words is with the past tense endings of the regular verbs . The different +ED endings can be problematic for students if they don't learn how to pronounce them properly, in the early . They tend to pronounce it only one way,most likely with the "ID" sound.
