After reading Unit 5, I have a much better understanding on the strategies that should be used to manage a classroom. I also learned some actions that should be avoided. I learned that the smallest gestures such as eye contact and gestures can have an impact on the management of a classroom. For example, eye contact can be used to keep students engaged even when they are not actively participating. Gestures can also be used to help explain instructions or a part of speech when language becomes an issue. I learned that there is a critical distinction between teacher talking time and student talking time. There are times for each, but there needs to be a balance in order for a successful lesson plan. I learned the pros and cons of different seating arrangements. This unit also helped me to understand how to build rapport with the students and how to deal with disruptive students.
