Unit 4 focuses on tenses, specifically the past, present, and future tenses, as well as their four aspects; simple, continuous, perfect, and perfect continuous. As with previous units, unit 4 goes into detail about their usages, form, and gives us typical student errors and teaching ideas to use in the classroom. After reading through this unit I understand why many ESL learners can have trouble with tenses. While we have only three tenses, past, present, and future, each tense has an additional four aspect that requires slight alterations and memory work. For example, in the present simple tense, first person and third person requires a change to the verb. “I watch” changes to “he watches”. Not only that some verbs requires even more changes. Verbs ending in specific letters requires a “es” and some requires an “ies”. All of this can be demoralizing to many.
