Unit 7 dove more in-depth about how vocabulary, grammar and functions can be taught in an effective way to ESL students. I learned that different ESA methods are often used when teaching different parts of a language. For example, Straight Arrow techniques are often used when teaching vocabulary. Teaching more complex topics such as grammar and functions typically use Boomerang or Patchwork techniques, although this is not a steadfast rule. I learned the specifics that children need to be taught. For example, the origin of the new vocabulary words is not as important as the meaning and usage. Similarly, students need to know how grammatical structures are formed, how they are used and their meaning.
