The unit began by detailing what productive skills are (speaking and writing) as well as factors to take into consideration when deciding to to perform communicative games with the class. The unit continued on with discussing speaking teaching content and distinguished between accuracy and fluency activities (the former being concentrated on producing correct language and the latter focused on allowing students to be creative with the language). The unit also gave examples of both accuracy activities (controlled and guided by the teacher) as well as fluency activities (creative communication). Next the unit discussed reasons as to why students may be discouraged to speak and participate in class (lack of confidence, peer intimidation, etc) as well as remedies to help encourage student participation (pair-work, group-work, etc). This unit section also provided tips for the teacher to take into account before, during and after the lesson activity. Then the unit moved onto focusing on writing, emphasizing the importance of handwriting and spelling during the language learning process taking note to discuss difficulties many students might have whose native language does not utilize the same alphabet as English. This portion of the unit also covered other issues involving writing that student may face such as punctuation and layout as some students' native languages may not include punctuation or spaces between words. The unit emphasized creative writing assignments and activities as method to developing the writing skills of students. The unit concluded by discussing how games (both competitive and cooperative) can be useful outlets and methods for encouraging student interest and participation in learning lesson contents as well as helping to better reinforce the language concepts.
