Unit 07 covers how to teach receptive skills: reading and listening. The lesson plan for teaching receptive skills will most likely feature Pre-Teach Vocabulary (new and necessary vocabulary) in the initial Study phase. Also it will probably feature an interesting clip or excerpt in the Engage regarding the topic to be read / listened to. To make sure we teach receptive skills effectively we have to bear in mind the following:
1. What is interesting for the students (over a period of time we should cover a variety of topics)
2. What is motivating and engaging, not intimidating or daunting
3. Pre-teach vocabulary (but not over-do it - just focus on what is needed for comprehension)
4. Use the same material to harvest different skills - e.g., the same text can be used for listening or for reading and for comprehension.
5. Help the students learn i. predictive skills (guess), ii. skimming skills, iii. scanning skills, iv. deduction skills
6. Make comprehension tasks promote understanding rather than merely checking understanding.
7. Design Activate activities that further emphasise receptive skills.
This Unit has been useful for me in making sure all my lesson plans give due emphasis on each of the productive and receptive skills (Writing, Speaking, Reading and Writing) so that the students' progress will be holistic.
