In this unit, the concept of conditionals is introduced. Conditionals are statements that depend on one half of the statement to be 'true' in order for the outcome to be 'true'. For example, a zero conditional would be, when liquid freezes it forms a solid mass. The condition is liquid freezing. Only if liquid is frozen will the outcome be a solid mass. Zero conditionals are conditionals that are known to be true. Another example of a conditional is a third conditional. A third conditional is when the condition is hypothetical, meaning the outcome is also hypothetical. One could say, "If I had decided to study teaching, I could have been a teacher." Since teaching was never studied the outcome remains hypothetical because the first condition never occurred.
The second half of the unit is focused on direct and reported (or indirect) speech. Direct speech is dialogue; for example, Jenny said, "I went to the store yesterday." Jenny said it therefore it is direct. Now if an outsider were to paraphrase what Jenny said that would be reported speech; as seen next, Jenny said she went to the store yesterday or Jenny said that she went to the store the previous day depending on the situation at hand. Certain phrases of direct speech change when it becomes reported speech, such as, today becomes that day and as seen above yesterday could become the day before. A way of teaching direct and reported speech would be to have students create a teleprompter report for a news crew on a current event either as a serious news broadcasting or to make it more fun as an SNL or late night talk show news report.
