This unit was particularly interesting to me as it covered different teaching methodologies and techniques. It explained all the various teaching methods to face an English class and how to develop a balance lesson plan. It also explained in depth the Engage, Study, Activate (ESA) approach which aims to a natural and comprehensive study of the language.
During my lessons I always try to stick to this teaching philosophy, especially when it comes to start with an engage phase and to finish with an activate phase. I believe that this teaching approach really helps to maximize the students attention and helps them to absorb new information. By following this lesson structure it is easier for the teacher to get the students involved and participating, which translate in an successful lesson.
It is also important to understand the flexibility of this approach, one of its perks, and to be able to get the best out of this possibility. Sometimes it feels easier to stick to same formula, but students will always appreciate a new twist. Besides, the class will be more effective if a variety of techniques are used together to build up the final objective of the lesson.
This unit shared also several good ideas, tips and resources to work on the different stages of the ESA lesson. This is for sure a very valuable information. It is not a fixed recipe, but an useful guide to English teachers.
