Unit 11 covers receptive skills-reading and listening, from four basic skills in any language. Reading and listening is divided into categories 'For a purpose' and 'For entertainment'. Reading and listening is not just about recognizing and understanding the words but also also about the ability to grasp the overall meaning from a pre-existing knowledge of the world. There are number of specialist skills to employ and understanding the context when reading or listening depends on expertise in these areas: Predictive skills, specific information-scanning, general idea-skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. The more language exposed to the students, the more they will learn. Creating interest by getting the students engaged, choosing a variety of topics, providing comprehensive tasks that promote understanding will assist in students reading and listening skills.
