What I think that I have learned in unit 16 about conditionals and reported speech is that conditionals are sentences containing ‘if’ or similar expressions such as ‘when’, which refer to past, present and future possibilities. There are two clauses, the ‘if’ and the main clause, and either can come in the first part of a conditional sentences. There are five main conditionals, zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional and mixed conditional. All of them has its form and its uses. The typical mistakes and errors is that many students find it quite difficult to see the difference in usage between the 1st and 2nd conditionals. Similar problems can arise with 3rsd and mixed conditionals. There are some teaching ideas that can be use, for example, split sentences, complete the conditional, chain conditionals, what a question, etc.
Any sentence could be direct speech. reported speech is to repeat what somebody else said, but when we turn direct questions into reported speech, there will be some changes take place. Also I have to notice that a number of changes, when the reporter uses a reporting verb in the past, such as said, told, asked, etc. Same goes on the pronoun denoting who is spoken to can also change, and that depending on the context. The potential for mistakes, errors and general difficulty is enormous due to the number of changes that are made with verb tenses, patterns, pronouns, questions, time expressions, etc. In the end, there are three great teaching ideas that i can use, intermediaries, reporting verbs and media interviews.
