Unit 08 gives us an overview of how to teach the two productive skills: speaking and writing. Both these skills need output from learners so it is integral for the teacher to create a non-intimidating and relaxed atmosphere where students can be easily coaxed into output: speaking and / or writing. This is best achieved through games! For speaking, we aim for the two aspects of accuracy and fluency. Accuracy can be achieved through controlled activities, where students build their confidence. Once they are confident, they will move more easily into participating in fluency activities. Even with speaking, the student needs to be given time to think and plan what to say. For writing objectives, there are added aspects that need to be looked into: legible hand-writing, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation. Although writing may seem tedious (to both teachers and students) the product of written material often brings a sense of pride! In real life, writing is normally an individual effort. However, with careful thought, writing assignments can be made as group-work to be done in class, and can be a lot of fun! I have found both Unit 7 (Receptive skills) and Unit 8 (Productive skills) very informative. As all four aspects are equally important, the two Units have helped me to be aware that I can and must make sure all four aspects are covered in any one lesson.
