The notion of teaching beginner level classes seem terrifying for a lot of beginner teachers, but here are some basic guidelines and advice that might be helpful when teaching beginners. In EFL a distinction is made between true beginners and false beginners. True or absolute beginners have had no or very little English instruction whereas false beginners might have studied English in the past, but never acquired any real grasp of the language. Beginner students have little or no prior knowledge of the target language and the teacher becomes a central determiner in whether students accomplish their goals.
When teaching beginner classes, teachers should consider the following aspects: creating an appropriate learning environment, being aware of teacher talk, knowing their role in the classroom, focusing on what the students can already do, following an appropriate curriculum and using relevant activities.
